On the nature of Job titles
A recent tweet by AdBroad : http://twitter.com/adbroad/status/10474922314 about who owns the brand in the future—marketing or technology—reminded me of an old post on job titles of the future. In my opinion, one can no longer afford to specialize in Technology, without considering the marketing implications of the field. Little of the “technology” spend in the future...

Selling the "win" as an intra-preneur.
Recently, I’ve been working on selling through a complex idea across multiple business units of Experian. This process has unfolded over the last 9 months (I know, I know…but that’s what you get at a large Co!).
I’ve noticed a few things: (1) Selling a new, innovative idea in a space that is rapidly changing (In this case, real-time bidding for display advertising)...

If I were looking for a job...
Thought I’d get back in to long form blogging (new year res) with this post on the companies and niches I currently find most interesting if “I were looking for a job”…
I’ve broken them in to categories, please feel free to weigh in on the comments if I’ve missed any *YOU* think are up and coming: (1) Real-time Data. This area is exploding and is also ripe for...

Job Interview Questions to ASK your (future)...
Having spent the majority of my time in a Marketing, PR or Business Development capacity (for both start-up and F500 companies), you might think I’d have very little to say on the subject of IT, Technology platforms, the role of the CIO, etc in a job interview process!
However, what is clear to me, as I’ve morphed into various new product development and “liason” roles...
A few shout-outs...
Have been using Radian6 (http://www.radian6.com) recently and really like their interface/ease of use and ability to help me articulate the impact SM is having on our business! Great job guys!
And, we’re making progress with a new FaceBook Brand page, thanks much to RoyalPink Productions, however, we are still struggling a fair amount with compliance and the main corporate blog site/rules....

Wow. Social Media moves fast.
Or, perhaps I should say…Time flies when you are having so much fun. Apologies for no updates to the blog…
Have been meeting with senior teams at Yahoo, and Facebook, and Myspace…Whew! How much more social can we get??
Still trying to figure out exactly the right blend between Direct Response, Branding and Engagement. It’s not an easy balance, especially for an...

To all the "Do-ers"..
Chuck Hollis had an excellent post on the “Do-ers” vs. all the “Experts” who constantly fill the social media airwaves: http://chucksblog.emc.com/a_journey_in_social_media/2008/11/those-who-talk-vs-those-who-do.html.
Certainly, we need forward thinking bloggers who constantly assess and assimilate new technologies, offerings and business models. But, it certainly would...
API Middlemen: How big companies will get linked...
Having worked at one of the largest, and most tightly controlled, data repositories, it may be that I am biased. But, I see a clear role for a new breed of service companies to help facilitate the freeing up of large data assets in a manner that also works from a compliance & security (and, no doubt political) perspective. Not quite “middleware”, but rather ”middle...

Integrating marketing. Or, throwing it on the wall...
So, we are precisely two days in to the release of our “Ed McMahon” series of videos that compliment our “traditional” FCR Band jingle commercials. While completely unplanned from a timing perspective, their release has coincided nicely with our YouTube cover song contest (of aforementioned jingles).
While we were careful (and contractually limited) not to link the Ed...
Update on Options Trading as online marketing...
Last month I posted about how we were implementing the mindset, and rigor, usually associated with traders or portfolio managers on Wall St. to our Account Executives/AM’s for their online marketing efforts. Well, we are one month in and making great strides! Today, not only did we implement and test everyone on the concepts and metrics around a Portfolio Improvement Index (basically an...
YouTube Update #368...(aka Social Media Marketing...
O.K. not really #368. I wish I had the time to post all the gory details of our emerging attempts at cultivating a community on (and off) YouTube. But, unfortunately, I also need to actually spend time *cultivating* said community:-). However, as some of you know by now, we have some new media assets available to compliment our wonderfully (or alarmingly, depending on your view point) catchy...
Twitter, Charity, and My company..
I’ve been working on a few contests lately, and have been thinking about trying to leverage the power of Micro-blogging to raise the awareness of charities and my brand simultaneously.
Thanks to Shannon Paul’s post: http://shannonpaul.wordpress.com/2008/10/03/learn-the-rules-so-you-can-break-them-well/

YouTube Freecreditreport Cover Song Contest...
So, our contest launched successfully on Monday (9/29)…along with over 400 comments on the video lead in page, we’ve received over 1100 channel subscribers and 27K channel views. We’ve a long way to go to keep the contest chatter interesting, and of course, keep spreading the word, but it seems we are off to a good start.
Our one and only requirement was to “have...

To do anything you need good people...
On the eve of our large YouTube Video Cover song contest, I just wanted to give a shout out to the guys who really burned oil to pull this off (lawyers notwithstanding). We leveraged two groups…Saforian (www.saforian.com) for the YT channel page design, and creative direction for the micro-site (thanks Todd!) and Royal Pink Productions (www.royalpinkproductions.com) for the lead in video...
Chicken or egg? Does a viral video happen or do...
Within any large company different agendas compete. No different where I work. One of the ideas that was batted around was leveraging celebrities who had gotten into financial trouble as spokepersons for our brand. Not a shabby idea. And, our first effort (psst…Ed McMahon) I thought was hilarious.
Still, there is the little manner of “releasing” such content. I prefer a more...
Update on "behind the scenes blog"
So, we were really hoping to launch a behind the scenes blog of our upcoming YouTube contest, so we could *contribute* to the understanding of F500 using social media…but, alas, after it was approved…then rejected…then approved again…it was killed because it didn’t “fit” the brand.
Sad. I guess talking about what we *don’t know* and what we...
So, we're making progress on our YouTube...
We’ve gotten our intro “ad” initial cuts

and the micro-site to support it all is in version 2 in staging…

just some final polishing and we should be able to work on the how we are going to give away so many t-shirts and ringtones with little to no “staff” help!

A little fluffy, but not a bad piece on how brands are trying to engage users “off the platform” (what I call engagement efforts that do not occur on a brand’s particular domain). I’d like to see more adoption statistics, besides the one referenced for Bacardi. Hopefully, brands will embrace that part of being “open” as well and share results!
Online Marketing and Options trading
Since “social media strategist” only takes one so far in the halls of a large corporation, most of us are also tasked with numerous other “real jobs” to justify the paycheck (ugh!). Sometimes, these can be equally fullfilling as strategizing on and executing against a new viral campaign. But, not always.
However, one of my current “additional duties” is to...

Newest spot on YouTube →
Measuring the number of parodies vs. number of views / favorites. Interestingly, it seems the number of interactions from or on older commercials also increases as we bring out new spots. Seems like we in the internet space need to coin a phrase (or perhaps borrow one from mathematics) about how “new” entries (links, pages, videos) re-inforce the older, existing pages, links, videos...
Fanaticism vs. boredom
How we summed up the push/ pull of social media “marketing” the other day in a working session on our upcoming YouTube video contest. That is, companies certainly need to encourage participation and rellish the fans of a particular social object; however, how much is “too much”? How much “assitance” with the creation or management of participation will lead to...
Trusting Functionality at Toolness
Interesting article on Trust and using social aspects to verify it. We are working on a few items at experian that may help this space, but it is interesting to see others stuggling with the same issue. One concern I have is for the “trusted, third-party”. IS there ever such a thing? Speaking from a bureau, we certainly take great care to walk that fine, regulated line. But it is...

Interesting survey on users’ perception of “privacy”. No baseline to see if this is the emergence of a trend, but it seems to be being pushed by the younger set and/or is reflective of people spending more and more time online.
